Sushi Symbol Design

Illustrator | InDesign | XD

For this symbol design project, I chose to reimagine sushi in a playful, versatile, and applicable way. I selected the most popular types of sushi found in Japanese cuisine and rendered them in a unified way, focusing on graphic language and color cohesiveness. The challenge of this project was finding a way to simplify the symbols while maintaining enough visual detail for a viewer to immediately understand it. For my application, I decided to display the symbols on a digital menu that may be displayed at a table in a modern restaurant.

The ultimate challenge of the symbols was to render the objects in a simplified way, while maintaining enough visual detail to understand what the subject is. It was challenging to strip such complex objects down to simple shapes and forms and to find a way to render them in a unified visual language.

I wanted to utilize a digital menu to display the symbols in a realistic manner. A digital menu allows the symbols to be individually displayed in an applicable and stylistic way. The biggest challenge in the application design was finding a way to marry the illustrative symbols into a realistic menu.

FINAL

The final symbol design both visualizes and emulates sushi in a graphic way. The final color palette is both elegant and reminiscent of the objects themselves. The final application helps display the symbols in an organized and detailed manner, using the menu as a way to illustrate both practicality and artistic style.
